Sierra de las Nieves is holding its 17th Photography Contest to highlight its biodiversity and rural identity

The deadline for submitting entries is from July 3 through September 1, 2026, inclusive

The Association of Municipalities of the Sierra de las Nieves and the Natural Park have officially announced the opening of the registration period for the 17th edition of their Photography Contest. This contest is one of the most established cultural and environmental events in the province of Málaga, designed to combine artistic expression, the promotion of nature, and social awareness. This year, the contest takes on special significance as it coincides with the fifth anniversary of the Sierra de las Nieves’ designation as a National Park.

The event is organized around a single theme: the natural wealth and rural environment of this region, which is also designated as a Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO’s MaB Program and is part of the European Union’s Natura 2000 Network. To facilitate participation and organize the content, the organizers have established two clearly distinct categories: “Biodiversity and Geodiversity,” focused on the ecological and geological richness of the area, and “Human Activities,” designed to highlight traditional trades, rural life, and the respectful interaction of local communities with their environment.

Regarding the purpose of the event, Rafael Haro, Director of the Sierra de las Nieves National Park, notes: “This event offers an unbeatable opportunity to highlight the biodiversity and sustainable activities that characterize our region. A deep understanding of this environment fosters the love and respect that are essential to ensuring its conservation and educating future generations.”

For his part, José Miguel Marín, President of the Sierra de las Nieves Association of Municipalities and mayor of Istán, states: “The Association remains firmly committed to promoting this inter-institutional collaboration project. We seek not only to recognize technical talent but also to strengthen the regional identity. It is gratifying to know that the twelve winning entries from the two main categories will have the privilege of featuring in the official 2027 calendar, an iconic item that will bring the beauty of our region to countless homes and institutions.”

The contest rules state that anyone who wishes to participate may do so, whether they are amateur or professional photographers, with the sole exception of jury members. Each entrant may submit a maximum of four photographs for each of the established categories. Files must be submitted in high-quality JPG format, with a minimum resolution of 3780 x 2835 pixels and a maximum file size of 20 MB. The submission period runs from July 3 through September 1, 2026, inclusive.

Rules for the 17th Sierra de las Nieves National Park Photography Contest

A key aspect of the call for entries is its rigorous ethical approach. In accordance with the National Park’s guidelines, any images in which it is determined that the photographer has caused damage to or endangered elements of the fauna, flora, or geodiversity will be immediately disqualified, with particular emphasis on the express prohibition against submitting images of bird nests.

The technical jury will award six consecutive prizes and six honorable mentions for each category. The awards will include certificates, commemorative plaques, and gift sets related to this valuable protected area.
