Fuente de los Molinos, Istán

The Molinos de Istán River flows endlessly from the depths of the Sierra Blanca, emerging from among the rocks—a phenomenon known as a spring. Limestone mountain ranges, such as the Sierra Blanca, have numerous cavities and crevices inside them, so they act like a giant sponge that stores rainwater within. When the pressure is high enough, the water seeks a natural outlet, giving rise to the Molinos River.

It owes its name to the existence of numerous water-powered flour mills, many of which date back to the Al-Andalus period. Over time, they fell into disuse, but some, such as the one in San Miguel, survived a little longer as power plants.

This river owes its name to the historic presence of water-powered flour mills, many of which date back to the Al-Andalus period. Since Islamic times, a network of irrigation canals has channeled its waters to sustain the orchards located downstream, which are characteristically terraced and sloped, where farmers have carried out their agricultural activities for nearly a millennium.

The Paseo del Nacimiento leads us through these orchards to the river’s source. The musical murmur of its crystal-clear waters, along with the humidity and coolness of the place, create sensations that can only be experienced here. Further downstream, the waters of the Molinos River join those of the Verde River, which pool in the Concepción Reservoir—a true water source for the Costa del Sol. That is why Istán is known as the “Spring of the Costa del Sol.”
