Castaño Santo of Istán

Ver galería

It is located in the Hoyo del Bote area, within the Sierra Real de Istán. This chestnut tree—a massive specimen—is approximately 800 to 1,000 years old and has a trunk circumference of 15 meters at a height of 1.30 meters above the ground, with the base reaching 22 meters. The two main branches, which are quite thick, support a crown that is also very wide.

The Andalusian Chestnut Platform expressed its support for the conservation and protection of the chestnut tree, urging the Regional Government of Andalusia to designate it as a Natural Monument of Andalusia. The proposal was put forward as an exercise in collective responsibility because There are various factors that may be jeopardizing its conservation, such as the impact of climate change, which weakens the tree against pathogens; the incidence of pests and diseases affecting Andalusian chestnut groves; and the pressure resulting from the high number of uncontrolled tourist visits, which causes soil compaction and the deterioration of the immediate environment due to constant trampling.

The Regional Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment has begun the process (February 2021) to have it designated a Natural Monument. This designation establishes a clear legal framework for its planning and management based on its natural, cultural, and scenic value, facilitating its conservation and enhancement while ensuring it remains compatible with the public interest.

The Provincial Council of Málaga has designated it as a “Unique Spot in the Province” due to its beauty and environmental or cultural value, taking into account factors such as accessibility, respect for the environment, conservation, and historical significance.

Located on privately owned land, the Castaño Santo de Istán is already protected because it lies within the “Sierra Bermeja y Real” Special Conservation Area, within the Andalusia-Morocco Intercontinental Mediterranean Biosphere Reserve, as well as on land within the Sierra de las Nieves National Park. It is also included in the Inventory of Unique Trees and Groves of Andalusia.

In recent years, meetings have resumed with the estate’s owners and the Istán City Council with the aim of signing an agreement for the protection and conservation of the estate, to accompany its designation as a Natural Monument.

One of the many legends associated with this unique tree tells how Rey Fernando el Católico, in 1501, celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving beneath its branches during the events surrounding the Mudejar revolt in the Sierra Bermeja, which, for the Muslim residents of the Serranía de Ronda, meant either forced conversion to Christianity or exile to North Africa.
