“Escaleretas” is the name given to the natural steps formed by the limestone slabs in this area. This short circular trail will take us to the Pinsapo de Las Escaleretas Natural Monument. Although the tree is in decline, it still commands respect with its more than 350 years of age, having once been the largest Spanish fir in the entire Sierra de las Nieves National Park.
It is associated with numerous legends, most of which concern people who walked from the Ronda area to the Río Verde plains.
The route begins with a descent along a forest trail, where we’ll turn left after 300 meters onto the Escaleretas trail. Shortly afterward, we’ll come across the Pinsapo de las Escaleretas, a natural monument that, although in a state of decline, remains impressive due to its great stature and age. We’ll continue along the trail to reach the Puntal de la Mesa overlook, where we’ll enjoy magnificent views of the Río Verde Valley and La Torrecilla.
The return route passes by the great Spanish fir at Puntal de la Mesa—a worthy successor to the Spanish fir at Las Escaleretas—and continues along the forest trail back to the starting point, winding through Spanish firs and other trees typical of the Mediterranean habitat.
