The Sierra de las Nieves National Park Celebrates Its Fifth Anniversary as a Driving Force for Sustainable Development
This morning, the Sierra de las Nieves National Park celebrated its fifth anniversary with an official ceremony in the town of Istán, where key political and technical representatives who have made the establishment of this protected area possible gathered.
The meeting not only served to take stock of the achievements made since the park was designated in 2021, but also to analyze the future challenges and opportunities facing this unique site in the province of Málaga.
The event began with a welcome address by the mayor of Istán and president of the Association of Municipalities of the Sierra de las Nieves, José Miguel Marín, who highlighted the pride of the member municipalities in leading a strategy that has placed the region at the forefront of environmental conservation in Spain. During his remarks, the mayor stressed that “this anniversary demonstrates that environmental protection and the economic development of our towns can and must go hand in hand.” He also emphasized the role of the Association: “The National Park is the result of a collective effort and an indispensable tool for keeping the population in the region through green jobs and sustainable tourism. We would not be here without the voice and unity of our towns.”
Next to speak was Rafael Haro, director of the Sierra de las Nieves National Park, who reaffirmed that “the designation as a national park was the result of the efforts of many people, with all levels of government working together toward a common goal, all working together over the past five years to develop this project through a range of initiatives, activities, and infrastructure projects.”
Along the same institutional lines, the representative of the Director General of Protected Natural Areas highlighted “the importance of the National Park within Andalusia’s ecosystems and its history and development, which stem from the territory itself—a long-standing demand that finally became a reality five years ago.”
For her part, Patricia Navarro, the representative of the Regional Government of Andalusia in Málaga, who closed the event, emphasized that “over the past five years, we can say that we have met our objectives. “The main objective was to redouble our efforts to protect a great treasure of biodiversity and our natural heritage in the province of Málaga and throughout Andalusia—protection that is compatible with economic development and the social revitalization of the municipalities that make up the region,” The delegate highlighted the “unity that has led the region to its designation as a National Park—a unity that was driven from within the region itself.”
One of the highlights of the event was the panel discussion titled “When a Territory Is Built Together: The Path to the National Park.” Participants in this panel discussion included José Antonio Víquez, delegate for Sustainability and the Environment in Málaga; Rafael Haro, director of the Sierra de las Nieves National Park; and Tomás Rueda, coordinator of the Sierra de las Nieves World Biosphere Reserve. The speakers reviewed the complex technical and administrative process that transformed a long-standing demand into a legal reality, agreeing that the designation as a National Park has greatly enhanced the region’s international profile.
The prominence of municipalism was evident at the “Mayors’ Roundtable: The Local Drive Behind the Creation of the National Park, ” moderated by Rafael Haro himself. During this discussion, the mayors of the region shared their experiences and agreed that the park has marked a turning point for the local economy. The mayors emphasized the need to continue working in a coordinated manner through the Association of Municipalities so that the park’s benefits directly contribute to the well-being of residents.
The commemorative event concluded with the screening of an institutional video showcasing the scenic and ethnographic richness of the Sierra de las Nieves, followed by a well-received musical performance by a string quartet. Finally, attendees enjoyed a celebratory reception that highlighted the region’s cuisine and local products as part of the cultural identity of this protected area.
