Fuente del Caño, Serrato

Ver galería

The Fuente del Caño is located south of Serrato, next to the old road to El Burgo, which leads to that town through farmland.

Over the years, it has undergone several repairs, the most recent in 2008, so it is not known what it originally looked like or from what period it dates. It consists of a stone-clad front with clay bricks laid in a sardinel pattern, featuring a ceramic plaque bearing the fountain’s name. In the lower area, there is a small pool with two simple iron pipes through which water flows and a watering trough. The first was for people to drink water, and the second was for watering the livestock. On either side, some concrete benches invite us to sit down, rest, and enjoy the coolness and the musical sound of the water, as we lose ourselves in our thoughts while gazing at the landscape. This style, with its distinctive features, is common in the villages of the Sierra de las Nieves.

The basin consists of a single piece and shows signs of wear from centuries of use; as the clay jugs were filled with water and lifted while heavier, they rubbed against the rim of the basin, causing its characteristic wear. The trough that draws water from the spring is made of monolithic rock blocks held together with iron clamps, a technique used in other fountains in the region and widely employed by the Greeks and Romans in their grand, timeless structures.

In the past, fountains and watering holes were essential infrastructure for daily life, since there was no running water. Its waters have provided for and quenched the thirst of many generations of Serrateños, as well as their livestock. Its excess water is collected in a watering trough a few meters further down, commonly known as the Abrevadero de la Fuente del Caño.
