The Santo Cristo del Calvario Chapel stands as a visual and spiritual landmark at the highest point in Casarabonela. Its strategic location makes it a natural lookout point offering panoramic views of the Guadalhorce Valley, attracting both devotees and hikers setting out on their trails toward the mountains.
The current structure has a square floor plan, a hipped roof topped by an iron cross, and an outer fence with a gate that runs along the entire perimeter. An inscription above its door indicates that the chapel was completed in 1783, although historical records and analyses suggest that its origins date back further, possibly to the 17th century. It is considered the oldest of the small chapels still standing in the town and was part of an ancient Way of the Cross that ran through the municipality since the 16th century, a tradition spurred by the arrival of the Order of the Minims of St. Francis. This historical connection gives it a heritage value that goes beyond its simple exterior appearance.
Historically, these types of buildings not only served a religious purpose but also provided shelter for farmworkers and merchants traveling along the roads connecting Casarabonela with Ardales and El Burgo. Today, although its use has changed, it continues to serve as a meeting place and marks the geographical boundary between the town center and the mountains.
From an architectural standpoint, it stands out for its simplicity, precision, modest proportions, and a white façade typical of Andalusian buildings. Outside, visitors will find stone benches in front of the main entrance, a space designed for rest and contemplation of the landscape.
Upon entering the chapel, visitors find an austere space that is nonetheless rich in symbolism. The interior is dominated by a statue of Christ on the cross at the moment of his death. The altar is decorated with floral motifs, candles, and a large number of votive offerings and reliquaries left by the faithful as a sign of gratitude or to make a request.
