It is the oldest neighborhood in the town, which belonged to the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada until its conquest by the Castilians in the late 15th century. Its population was predominantly Moorish until their expulsion in 1570, hence its influence on the urban layout of its historic center; which displays the characteristic features of traditional Andalusian architecture, which can be described as both defensive and climate-responsive, since its narrow, winding streets are not the result of disorder but were designed for military defense, protection from the sun, and the creation of microclimates that provide coolness.
The name Albaicín may derive from al-bayyān, which means “slope” or “hill,” a very accurate description of the terrain on which the town is situated.
