One of the most highly recommended sights in the town of Ojén is the fountain known as the Fountain of los Chorros, located in the Andalucía-square, next to the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación and very close to the Molino Museum.
The fountain was built in 1905 at the behest of Pedro Fernández on the site of an earlier one that had existed since the mid-19th century, which supplied the neighborhood with water for its daily needs, and today—after being restored in 2006 by Enrique Salvo Rabasco and his team of restorers—it stands as one of the town’s landmarks; it has five spouts and was also used as a watering trough for livestock.
After passing through it, the excess water is channeled through irrigation ditches dating back to the Al-Andalus period for later use in irrigating the vegetable gardens laid out on the terraced land that dots the surrounding area and constitutes one of the municipality’s defining features, as they are a visible manifestation of humanity’s efforts to harness this natural resource of undeniable value, which originates from various springs in the mountains, particularly the one known as Fountain Santa.
Today, the sound and freshness of its waters continue to take center stage in the Andalucía-square, and visitors should not leave without tasting them and quenching their thirst.
