Parish Church of Santa Ana, Alozaina

Ver galería

At the highest point of Alozaina, atop the ruins of its fortress, stands the Church of Santa Ana, which was built in the first decade of the 16th century. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous renovations, the most significant of which took place in the 18th century, as it affected the entire complex and is the one that has survived to this day.

It has a Latin cross plan, like the Iglesia de la Encarnación in Yunquera, with a single nave covered by a gable roof. At its base stands a small platform set atop a lowered arch. Two square-plan chapels with groined vaults are located at the corners formed by the transept arms and the nave.

Externally, two entrances stand out: the main entrance, with a semicircular arch between fluted pilasters that support an entablature bearing a tiled inscription commemorating the capture of the town in 1484. And the side cover, which features a simpler composition consisting of recessed bands.

The bell tower stands next to the chancel and consists of two sections. The first one has a square floor plan and is unadorned. Above it stands another structure with an octagonal floor plan, featuring four openings with semicircular arches through which the sound of the bells echoes, topped by a hipped roof. At its base stands the Cruz de los Caídos, accompanied by a ceramic depiction of Santiago Matamoros.
