Benahavís boasts a rich heritage of Al-Andalus fortifications worthy of study. In the surrounding area are Montemayor Castle and numerous farmstead towers of Muslim origin. Perhaps for this reason, many authors have sought to attribute an Al-Andalus origin to the building known as “the Palace,” although an examination of its construction techniques points to a later period. In the 19th century, Pascual Madoz’s dictionary already referred to it as “…a building they call ‘El Palacio,’ divided into fairly comfortable rooms,” which stood out among countless huts.
This structure is built with local peridotite rocks, with larger stones incorporated into the corners. It features a rectangular main structure to which the most eye-catching element is attached: a tower where one can still see the holes (boreholes) into which the scaffolding used for its construction was inserted.
This building, which must have belonged to a wealthy family, has undergone numerous alterations over the years and is now the Cultural Center and Municipal Library.
