The Qasr Bunayra citadel/castle remained in use until the late 16th century, after which it was abandoned because it no longer served a military purpose. The earliest historical references date back to the year 919, during Umar ibn Hafsun’s rebellion against the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba. Designated a Site of Cultural Interest in 1985, various archaeological activities have been underway within its walled enclosure since 2021, and significant structures have been documented dating from the Late Roman period through the Emirate, Caliphate, Almoravid, Almohad, and Nasrid eras, with some repairs and reinforcements carried out by the Castilians during the second half of the 16th century.
