Hiking the Waterfalls Trail is a unique experience in the Sierra de las Nieves. The trail winds through a Mediterranean forest where resin pines and holm oaks create a cool microclimate, accompanied by the soothing sound of waterfalls that guide us throughout the hike. The route combines sections of moderate ascent with flat stretches that allow you to enjoy the surroundings at a leisurely pace, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Río de los Caballos and the surrounding mountains.
Along the trail, you’ll discover natural pools and small waterfalls—perfect for cooling off—as well as rock formations like El Tajarillo and wetlands with native vegetation. The area’s biodiversity—ranging from birds of prey to small forest species—makes every step a surprise. The trail culminates at the Rejía Waterfall, a spectacular spot where you can feel the power of the water and the grandeur of this UNESCO-protected area.
The trail follows the course of the Río de los Caballos and winds through the small waterfalls and pools that give the route its name, passing by iconic sites such as the Charco de la Virgen, the Charco de la Laja, and the Rejía Waterfall.
Along the route, you’ll cross fords, pass through stretches of Mediterranean forest with Spanish firs and Spanish oak, and traverse areas with moderate to steep slopes, offering spectacular views of the Horcajuelos Ravine and the Caballos River basin. The combination of water, vegetation, and rock makes each section a unique spot to enjoy nature and the serenity of the surroundings.
