Chapel of the Divine Shepherd, Igualeja

Ver galería

Located on the street that bears its name, the Ermita del Divino Pastor is an 18th-century religious building that stands out as a notable point of interest for visitors to Igualeja. This building stands out not only for its age, but also for a number of architectural and artistic features that set it apart from other structures of its time.

Its unusual trapezoidal floor plan is an unconventional design choice that gives it a unique identity. The Baroque-Andalusian-style façade underwent restoration in 2001, which has preserved its appearance and ensured its structural stability. One interesting detail is the use of mural painting that imitates rough-cut stone masonry, a technique designed to give the appearance of stone masonry using more modest materials. The structure is topped by a two-part belfry that houses the bells. The main entrance is through a semicircular arch flanked by simple Tuscan-style columns, a feature that reflects the understated elegance of Andalusian rural Baroque.

There has been speculation that the chapel may have been part of an old convent, possibly belonging to the Carmelite or Franciscan order, which would add another layer of depth to its history, although this remains in the realm of local tradition.

Once inside, the space reveals a remarkable artistic heritage, also dating mostly from the 18th century. The centerpiece is the statue of the Divine Shepherd, a magnificent carving, along with other valuable works, such as a statue of Saint Joseph and a unique painting of the Divine Shepherd on glass, which is one of the chapel’s treasures. The walls and dome are adorned with decorative paintings. Of particular note is the dome, which depicts a “Rompimiento de Gloria”—a celestial scene intended to create a sense of openness toward the divine. The decor, combined with the plants and flowers, creates an atmosphere that visitors describe as special and full of charm.

It is known that devotees of the Divine Shepherd organize a procession on the feast of Corpus Christi, the Sunday following the main celebration, which is a sign of a vibrant community life.
