Church of St. Michael the Archangel, Istán

Ver galería

The Church of San Miguel el Arcángel in Istán dates back to the early 15th century and is one of the few that was not built on the site of a former mosque. Throughout its history, it has suffered considerable upheavals and destruction as a result of the Morisco revolt and the Guerra Civil, leading to various renovations.

Like the one in Istán, it has a single nave with two entrances: a side entrance with a semicircular brick arch, and the main entrance, located on the façade facing a narrow street, featuring a brick portal with a distinctive split pediment, characteristic of the Baroque style. Its interior is strikingly austere, and in some of the niches housing the statues, we can see remnants of Baroque-era wall paintings that once covered much of the walls. Of particular note is the image of San Miguel el Arcángel, the town’s patron saint, who is depicted with his sword casting the devil into hell, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil and of light over darkness.

This church does not have a bell tower, but rather a unique bell frame situated at an angle and consisting of two sections with arches that house the bells and the clock—a thoroughly Baroque architectural solution.
