Yunquera has numerous public fountains and urban watering holes, a testament to the abundance of its water and the needs of the past.
Perhaps the best known is the Pilar del Poyo, which is located in the center of town—in Plaza del Poyo—at a strategic intersection. It consists of a pillar and a facade. The pillar, which recently replaced the old one and which we see today, is made of dark red marble. Three bronze spouts pour water onto it. The façade features two pilasters supporting a molded pediment with a mixtilinear profile that projects a segmental arch in its central section, flanked by lateral volutes—a formal arrangement that draws on Baroque influences.
Because this fountain is located in a central spot, it was always very crowded, making it a lively gathering place—a characteristic it still retains today. Other shrines scattered throughout the streets of Yunquera include the Pilar del Piojo, the Pilar on Agua Street, and the Pilar on Nueva Street…
