Located along the A-7250 highway, in the La Atalaya area, about 2 km from the town, the San Roque Chapel is a must-see stop for anyone visiting Tolox. This small religious building, constructed in the 1970s, not only serves a spiritual purpose as the home of the town’s patron saint but has also become a popular rest area and a prime viewpoint overlooking the valley.
Architecturally, the building features a functional structure rich in symbolism, standing out for its simplicity and its integration with the natural surroundings. Its design includes pointed arches visible on three of its sides, giving it a simplified neo-Gothic appearance.
The interior is very austere, reflecting the humility associated with the saint it houses. Although the interior space is small, the fact that the image is visible from the outside through the bars allows travelers to pay their respects even if the chapel is closed at the time.
Every year, during the first half of August and just before the San Roque Festival, the town holds a pilgrimage that carries the statue from the town to this location, making it a central event for the residents.
