The Fuente Amargosa Spa Facility has its origins in Fuente Amarga, a location with exceptional climatic and geographic conditions which, combined with the therapeutic effects of its alkaline-bromide, ammonium-sulfide, and crenate–ferromagnesian waters (when drunk, inhaled, used in baths, or in showers), help treat respiratory diseases and other skin-related conditions (dermatitis).
The spring, discovered in 1867 by pharmacist José García Rey, rises at the foot of the hill known as Barrancas del Colmenar. In 1930, on the foundations of the old facility—which had opened in 1867 and was destroyed by a major flood in 1906—the current spa was built, which also includes a hotel; it is one of the town’s main tourist attractions.
