This town, nestled between the sea and the mountains, is considered the gateway to the Sierra de las Nieves from the Costa del Sol. Apparently, it takes its name from a personal name of Arabic origin: Jusayn. Its Al-Andalus heritage is evident in its labyrinth of streets and white houses, beautifully adorned with numerous plants. Below the village, traditional terraced vegetable gardens stretch out, and from numerous vantage points—particularly from the Cuevas Altas—it offers us unforgettable views of Homer’s wine-colored sea.
In Ojén , you can visit its caves, the Church of La Encarnación, the Los Chorros fountain, and the Olive Oil and Brandy Museum, as well as explore numerous trails in the surrounding area, including El Chifle—where the Almadán River emerges —and the beautiful El Juanar. Combining these activities with the area’s traditional cuisine—notably its “sopas hervidas” (boiled soups) and rice with fennel— makes for a perfect pairing.
Every summer, Ojén hosts the Ojeando music festival, featuring independent pop-rock and electronic music. It is considered one of the most unique and important music events in southern Spain.
