Fuente del Albar and Washhouse, Alozaina

Ver galería

In the town center of Alozaina, with its Al-Andalus heritage, there are several fountains that, until a few years ago, supplied water to the town. The best known of these is the Fuente del Albar because it also powered a public washhouse.

The presence or absence of water has shaped the development of many places. Alozaina is not lacking in this resource, a fact reflected in its urban layout and best exemplified by the Source: El Albar, which was supplied by an aqueduct originating in the mountains and running along the road from Castejón or Alozaina to Albar. Remains of the structure can still be seen along its final section, most notably a large semicircular arch that spans the Pasadilla stream and supplies both the fountain and the Albar washhouse.

The fountain is small in size, with two spouts and a single pillar. At its head is a niche containing an old cross, in keeping with the tradition of sanctifying and protecting these spaces. Adjacent to the fountain’s pillar is a long trough, in front of which lies a large cobblestone area. This speaks to the importance of livestock farming in Alozaina in times past.

Next to the fountain stands a old washhouse which made use of its waters. It is situated on a slightly lower platform—to draw the water by gravity—next to the stream. Running lengthwise on either side were a series of glazed clay basins—deep, circular vessels—where women washed, aided by a grooved board and a bar of soap. The excess water eventually flowed into the stream. This complex has been restored in recent years.
