This cultural space was created by restoring an old oil mill, to which several rooms and features—such as its unique observation tower—were added. The importance of olive trees and olive oil in the Sierra de las Nieves World Biosphere Reserve is such that there are several museums and interpretation centers dedicated to olive cultivation, such as the Molino de Ojén and the Molino de Albaiva in Casarabonela.
One of the rooms inside houses the machinery and components of two olive oil mills, one older and one more modern. The older one was animal-powered; that is, the millstones used to grind the olives were driven by a draft animal, usually a donkey. Part of a wooden press from this mill has been preserved, possibly dating from the 18th or 19th century. All the machinery from the modern mill has been preserved, since it was electrically powered and replaced the older one. The building also houses the tourist information office, and it is from here that the Guaro Festival’s activities are organized: “Luna Mora” nights, as well as exhibitions and other cultural activities.
