Ermita del Señor, Parauta

The Ermita del Señor is located at the main entrance to the town of Parauta and serves as an architectural and devotional landmark of great significance to the residents of the Serranía de Ronda. This building embodies a historical complexity that extends beyond its documented use since the 19th century.

From an architectural standpoint, it stands out for its small, square floor plan. The most striking feature is its roof, a pyramidal structure that crowns a building that many experts associate with the “qubba” style. Qubbas are structures of Islamic origin, typically domed tombs, which are very common in North Africa. The presence of this form in Parauta suggests that, although the current building has a documented history of use dating back centuries, its foundations or original design could date back to much earlier periods, possibly linked to the region’s Al-Andalus past. The entrance door is strategically oriented toward the south and is framed by a simple square pediment, maintaining an impeccably white appearance thanks to traditional whitewashing.

The value of this space lies not only in its walls, but also in its central role during Semana Santa in Parauta. The Ermita del Señor is the main venue for one of the province’s most unique traditions: the festival of “El Niño del Huerto.”

On Domingo de Resurrección, the statue of the Niño Jesús is carried from the parish church to this small chapel. There, the statue remains in a sort of mystical waiting period until the Virgen del Rosario comes out to meet it. What makes this place special is the ritual of the “races”: the thrones are carried at a brisk pace in successive attempts to draw closer. It is during the third race that the official “Encounter” takes place in front of the chapel, a moment when the residents celebrate the union of the two images before returning together to the town’s main church.
