Historic Center of Monda

The Historic Center or Complex of Monda was designated a “Picturesque Site” in 1971; this legal designation encompasses the town and its surroundings, due to the beauty of the ensemble formed by its urban center and the surrounding landscape, as well as the ruins of its castle, situated on a commanding hilltop, and the whitewashed houses that make up its urban fabric; a style highly characteristic of traditional Andalusian architecture, which preserves the remains of a monumental Stations of the Cross and features the parish church, dedicated to Santiago Apóstol, built in 1505 on the site of what had been the main mosque. Also worth noting are the Jaula Fountain and Washhouse, next to the La Lucía stream, which is currently covered by a vaulted structure.

With its designation as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC), in the category of Historic Site and under the name “Picturesque Landscape of the Town of Monda and Its Surroundings,” pursuant to the 1985 Spanish Historical Heritage Act, the entire complex enjoys a level of institutional protection that ensures the effective preservation of this cultural heritage, which is one of the defining characteristics of the region.
