Hornacinas (Las Cruces), Casarabonela

These are small recesses (niches) located in the corners and on the facades of many buildings in the town (more than 40 have been cataloged), topped with a semicircular arch and protected by a wooden frame and protective glass. In some cases, the support is carved from a single block of stone that is embedded in the wall.

There are several interpretations that attempt to explain its origin and function: a continuation of the Roman lararium; the need for the Moriscos to demonstrate the sincerity of their conversion; factors of neighborhood identity during the Corpus Christi festivities, related to traditional religion; and the result of devotions spread by religious orders (the practice of praying the rosary, the Stations of the Cross, and devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary).

On the Day of the Cross (in May), they take on a very special significance, and the crosses inside them are adorned (or “dressed,” as the saying goes) with flowers, while the surrounding area is prepared for the neighborhood celebration.

These cultural heritage elements are representative of Andalusian popular religiosity; they define and shape the cultural identity of Casarabonela, and possess undeniable historical, artistic, and ethnological significance.
