Plaza Alta in Tolox

The town squares in the Sierra de las Nieves World Biosphere Reserve are highly symbolic spaces that play an important role in shaping local identity. They are places where people gather to celebrate major festivals, whether religious (Semana Santa) or more popular in nature (food festivals). Surrounding these town squares are the three pillars of power: town halls (political power), churches (religious power), and the homes of the most prominent families and banks (economic power).

Tolox’s Plaza Alta is no exception, as for centuries it has been the hub of Tolox’s community life and the venue for various festivals that bring the people of Tolox together and strengthen their identity, such as the spectacular Cohetá or the Fiesta de los Polvos. However, during the Al-Andalus period, this space was located on the outskirts of what was then the town center and was used as an al-maqbara—that is, an Islamic necropolis—which is why it was formerly known as Plaza del Mocabel.
