As in the other towns that make up the Sierra de las Nieves World Biosphere Reserve, water plays a vital role in Yunquera. The water that flows down from the Sierra de las Nieves and emerges from springs supplies, through an intricate network of irrigation channels, its abundant vegetable gardens, numerous fountains, and several water-powered flour mills.
The so-called Puente de Palo is yet another structure closely linked to water management. Although it resembles a welcoming arch, it is actually a single-span aqueduct built in the early 20th century that spans the road leading into Yunquera to carry water from a spring to some vegetable gardens. It gets its name from the fact that it was originally made up of a wooden truss.
