The New Bridge in Ronda

Ver galería

In a region with such rugged and varied terrain as the Sierra de las Nieves World Biosphere Reserve, bridges have been—and continue to be—essential for connecting communities since ancient times.
The most spectacular, without a doubt, is the Puente Nuevo in Ronda, a true symbol of the city on the Tajo and an embodiment of the spirit of the Enlightenment, which rises nearly one hundred meters above the Guadalevín River, linking Ronda’s historic district with the modern area (El Mercadillo), and which in its day facilitated urban expansion. Its construction took place during the second half of the 18th century and replaced the previous bridge, which had collapsed, causing extensive damage. Thanks to the materials used in its construction, the bridge blends seamlessly into the landscape, harmonizing with the walls of the ravine that surround it.

Inside, above the central arch, there is a room that, among other uses, served as a prison. It now houses the Puente Nuevo Interpretation Center, which takes us on a journey through the bridge’s history. The base of this spectacular bridge is open to visitors, as it forms part of a stunning trail that runs along the Caminito del Desfiladero del Tajo, alongside the rushing waters of the Guadalevín River.
