We set out from the Hotel Altos de Istán. From here, looking southeast, high up and slightly to the left, we can see the distinctive shape of “PICACHO” and the trail leading to it, winding its way upward.

Behind the hotel, we’ll see a fenced-in water reservoir; take the left-hand lane, and a few meters down on the right, we’ll find the start of the trail (30S-0326227 / UTM-4049943). This path zigzags steadily uphill, leading us to a pass (30S-0326585 / UTM-4049565), where we’ll see that the path continues uphill and connects with the Istán–La Concha trail.

We’ll take the left path, and after a few meters we’ll reach the summit of “EL PICACHO” (30S-0326571 / UTM-4049644), from where we’ll enjoy a beautiful view of both the hotel and the town of Istán, with the “Sierra Real” in the background (Plaza de Armas, 1,330 meters), and a little further back and to the right, we’ll see “EL TORRECILLA,” the highest peak in the province. We’ll descend along the same path.

Route itinerary

The trail zigzags upward from the back of the hotel until it reaches a pass near the junction with the Istán–La Concha route. From there, a short detour leads to the summit of El Picacho.

The return trip follows the same route, offering views of Istán, Sierra Real, and the surrounding mountains.
