The trail starts at Tajo Banderas, next to a playground, and climbs along a concrete path to Las Errizas, where you can enjoy sweeping views of the Río Verde Reservoir, Sierra Blanca, Pico de la Concha, and Istán.

Before reaching the top of the hill, take a path to the right that descends alongside a power tower and offers views of the meandering Verde River. Further down, the trail enters a small pine forest and connects with an old irrigation ditch that leads to the best spot for crossing the river.

After carefully fording the Verde River, the trail ascends through the Cañada de los Laureles until it reaches the ruins of the old coal kiln, the main destination of the hike. The return trip can be made along the same path or by connecting to the Istán–Camino de la Cuesta–Ermita route.

Route itinerary

The trail climbs up to Las Herrizas, a natural overlook with views of the Río Verde reservoir, the Sierra Blanca, and the peak of La Concha. From there, the descent begins toward the Cañada de los Laureles and the Río Verde riverbed.

After crossing the river, the trail climbs briefly to the ruins of the old tar kiln, which is linked to the area’s historical forestry activities.
