Alameda del Tajo, Ronda

The Alameda del Tajo is one of those places that makes you understand why Ronda captivates both its residents and visitors alike. Formerly known as the Alameda de San Carlos, this tree-lined promenade and botanical garden, dating back to the early 19th century, is the city’s main park and one of its most iconic and popular spots; for many, it is the true heart of the city.

It is located next to the bullring and on the edge of the Cornisa del Tajo, and consists of five landscaped avenues that lead to a promenade with balconies from which visitors can admire La Hoya and the Serranía de Ronda, as well as the geological formation known as the Asa de la Caldera, which lies below its viewpoints.

Among its botanical treasures are trees over 200 years old that are listed in the guide to notable trees in the province of Málaga. These include a Himalayan cedar, a massive stone pine, and a three-thorn acacia.

The Ronda City Council put the renovation work out to bid in early 2022, based on a project designed by architect Sergio Valadez, who has won awards for his restoration work on Ronda’s historic paths. Notable among the renovations are the repaving of the central promenade, the enhancement of the surrounding areas, new lighting, and changes to all street furniture.

The Paseo de los Ingleses begins at the western end of the Alameda del Tajo and runs along the edge of the gorge until it reaches the gardens of the Hotel Victoria.

The Balcones del Tajo promenade is bordered by the Camino de los Tilos, which branches off from the Alameda and continues straight ahead until it reaches the Parador de Turismo in Ronda. This promenade also passes through the Blas Infante Gardens, a park adjacent to the Alameda that features several points of interest, such as the Miki Haruta Gazebo, dedicated to the memory of the Japanese painter who lived in the city; an open-air auditorium; and a tourist office.

Located within the Alameda is the new Vicente Espinel Theater, built on the site of a former festival grounds that had fallen into disuse but still contained several enormous trees.
