Chapel of Cristo de la Cruz del Pobre, Yunquera

Ver galería

Its construction may date back to the first half of the 19th century, and its location stems from the fact that it was a crossroads next to one of the main access routes to the town—and a suitable place for prayer. It has a hexagonal floor plan and is covered by a hemispherical dome. Inside, it houses a statue of the Crucified Christ, a testament to the deep-rooted popular devotion among the local community.

Regarding its origin, the most widely accepted theory is that before the building was constructed, there was already a wooden or stone cross on that very spot, and some residents recount a legend associated with an old, wealthy farmer —a deeply devout man who led an austere life—who commissioned its construction so that the image of the Crucified Christ could be worshipped, on one condition: that every day, at dusk, a small oil lamp be lit for it.

The chapel takes on a very special significance during the Good Friday celebrations, both in the morning and in the afternoon; and the statue was restored in 2010, along with the altarpiece and the silver lamp hanging from the ceiling, which had previously belonged to the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation.
