Santa María la Mayor Church, Ronda

Here we find what is possibly the most spectacular temple in the entire Sierra de las Nieves World Biosphere Reserve, a true architectural gem that masterfully blends various styles. It is no surprise that it has been designated a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC). It was commissioned by the Catholic Monarchs, and instead of using rubble masonry or brick, its primary building material is ashlar.

It was built in the late 14th century on the site of the 13th-century Aljama Mosque in Ronda, and its interior still preserves some remnants of that mosque, such as its mihrab. Its architectural design is Gothic, but it incorporates elements from later artistic traditions, such as Renaissance and Baroque, since its construction spanned three centuries due to various factors, including damage from several earthquakes and a lack of funding…

It consists of three naves, the central one being the largest, with Moorish-style tiled roofs. At the front stands its bell tower, built of brick with a square base but topped by a polygonal section that houses the bells. It was originally the minaret of the mosque, but in the 16th century it was destroyed by lightning and later replaced by the current structure. Next to the tower are two rows of superimposed balconies, which were intended to provide local authorities with a vantage point from which to observe certain celebrations—such as religious ceremonies and bullfights—from a privileged position. Its construction led to the removal of the main entrance.

In the 17th century, the two side entrances were built in the Mannerist style, featuring spectacular and ornate designs. These lead to a magnificent interior where one can distinguish between the original construction—featuring typical Gothic pointed arches—and later additions, primarily in the Baroque style, where semicircular arches predominate and stucco work abounds.

Despite the destruction caused by the Civil War, numerous paintings, several altarpieces, and various 18th-century works of art were saved and can be enjoyed today.
