The Virgen de las Nieves has long been deeply venerated in Tolox, as this town—and others in the Sierra de las Nieves, such as El Burgo, which named her its patron saint in 1780—are closely linked to this Marian devotion.
In 1995, a group of local residents founded the Brotherhood of the Virgen de las Nieves of Tolox, and since then, the now-popular Pilgrimage of the Virgen de las Nieves has been celebrated every May.
An image was commissioned and brought from the town of Olot (Girona), and the chapel was built with local stones, designed to resemble a lime kiln—one of the many kilns used for lime production scattered throughout much of the region’s limestone mountains—where devotees, locals, and visitors come to venerate the image.
It is located in the heart of the Sierra de las Nieves National Park, about 4 km from the town, and the access route—which is easy and pleasant—follows the course of the Horcajos River, once you’ve passed Fuente Amargosa and the bridge over that river. It features a small recreational area equipped with benches and tables.
