Charco de la Caldera, Alozaina

Ver galería

In the province of Málaga, there are many waterfalls and cascades, but the one known as Charco de la Caldera, located in the municipality of Alozaina, is perhaps particularly unique and highly recommended for a visit, as it features a spectacular, stunningly beautiful waterfall with bluish water, just over 20 meters high, which flows into the Charco de la Caldera—a natural pool that serves as a refreshing oasis during the summer months, when temperatures are high.

The waterfall (Jorox Falls) has been designated a “Unique Spot in the Province,” as recognized by Her Excellency. Málaga Provincial Council; for their beauty, environmental or cultural value; taking into account factors such as accessibility, respect for the environment, conservation, and historical value.

The Jorox River originates in the Sierra Prieta massif—a karst landscape— and carves out a narrow valley about 2,500 meters long, situated along the blurred boundary that both connects and separates the Sierra de las Nieves from the Guadalhorce River valley, making it one of the natural areas with the greatest variety of landscapes in the region.

The spring has a large surface catchment area, with medium-to-high precipitation at its headwaters averaging around 900 mm per year. This characteristic ensures a minimum flow during the summer months, and there is no historical record of a complete drought.

The main feature of this valley is the contrast between the canyon or gorge at the headwaters of the stream and the vegetable gardens and fruit orchards that line its course along its first stretch.

From the road leading to the hamlet of Jorox, you can see this contrast between the limestone and travertine rocks and the irrigated areas. The canyon, which lies within the Sierra de las Nieves range, is impressive due to its sheer size. The area is home to numerous caves and chasms, making it a favorite destination for cavers.
