The source of the Genal River is a place of idyllic beauty that offers a unique experience. The waters of this unique river in Málaga flow abundantly from a cave known as “El Nacimiento.” That is why it has been declared Natural Monument (These are natural areas or features consisting primarily of formations of notable uniqueness, rarity, or beauty that deserve special protection.)
It is located in the upper part of Igualeja, and its surroundings are well-suited for recreational activities. In the mid-20th century, several dams were built to restock the river with trout. Its waters flow into the Guadiaro River, which is formed in La Indiana (Ronda) by the confluence of the Guadalevín and Guadalcobacín rivers, and empties into the Mediterranean.
The Genal River divides Igualeja in two—or unites it, depending on how you look at it. Its waters have been used to irrigate vegetable gardens, and in the past it even powered six water-powered flour mills.
Along its course, the Genal River has shaped the entire landscape under its influence, giving it a character all its own: the so-called Valle del Genal, which can be considered a subregion of the Serranía de Ronda. It is made up of 15 villages divided between the so-called Alto Genal and the Bajo Genal, to which this river—the true backbone of this region—gives life and meaning. In addition to its immense ecological value, this area boasts a long history in which Al-Andalus culture has played a pivotal role.
The source of the Genal River and its surroundings are well worth a peaceful, leisurely visit, as they help us understand the immeasurable natural and cultural value of water in the Sierra de las Nieves World Biosphere Reserve.
