Church of Santiago Apóstol, Monda

Ver galería

The Church of Santiago Apóstol stands in Plaza de la Constitución; it was built on the site of an old mosque in the early 16th century. Over the years, it has undergone several renovations.

It has three naves, the central one being wider and taller, with a gabled roof covered in Moorish-style tiles. Like others, it has two entrances: a side entrance and the main entrance, featuring a large semicircular arch in the Mudejar style crowned by a pediment housing a ceramic composition depicting Santiago Matamoros on his white horse, rearing up, in the thick of battle in defense of Christendom—a one-of-a-kind piece commissioned from the prestigious workshops of Ruiz de Luna in Talavera de la Reina. Next to it stands the bell tower with its clock, topped by a traditional weather vane.

The interior is divided into three naves. The central nave houses the main altar, and the side naves each feature vaults decorated with plasterwork, with the one on the right (the Epistle side) being particularly noteworthy for its segmented vault supported by pendentives, which is richly adorned with Marian symbols (a tower, a lily, etc.).

Until the mid-19th century, it housed the old Christian cemetery within its walls and at its chancel, which is why numerous graves remain beneath its floor.
