Iglesia del Santo Espíritu, Ronda

Ver galería

This church was built on the site of the mosque in Ronda’s Arrabal Alto neighborhood, next to the monumental Almocábar and Carlos V gates. Like Ronda’s Main Church, it was commissioned in 1485 by the Catholic Monarchs, and its construction took only two decades. Consequently, the original Gothic style in which it was designed and built predominates, although it incorporates elements from later styles.

Given the period in which it was built—when the conquest of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada was not yet complete and a large Mudejar population still lived there—there was a certain atmosphere of insecurity, so it was built with thick ashlar walls and few openings, giving it the appearance of a fortress-church and making it notably tall. Hence, its exterior is sober and decoratively austere, featuring a facade with a semicircular arch of ashlars and a Mudejar alfiz of Al-Andalus influence, atop which sits a dove representing the Santo Espíritu, crowned by a pediment

Its floor plan consists of a single nave flanked by side chapels. Inside, visitors will be struck by its Gothic vaults, composed of diagonal ribs, tie beams, tercelets, and ribs, which contrast with the octagonal vault at the apse of the main chapel, dating from the 17th century and featuring thick mixtilinear moldings whose keystone is crowned with an eight-pointed star.

It houses several altarpieces, paintings, and sculptures from the 17th and 18th centuries. Of particular interest is the painting of the Virgin of the Snows, which comes from the former Carmelite hermitage near El Burgo and features one of the few depictions of this convent.
