The Church of the Immaculate Conception is the main architectural and spiritual landmark of the municipality of Parauta. This building, originally constructed in the early 16th century, is a representative example of the artistic and religious transition that took place in the Serranía de Ronda following the Castilian conquest. It serves as a place of worship and stands as a historical testament to Mudejar architecture, offering visitors a clear glimpse into the simplicity and functionality of rural parish churches from that era.
It features a Latin cross floor plan, a classic layout designed to maximize space for the congregation during the celebration of the Eucharist. One of the most striking features from the outside is its bell tower, which has a square base and is constructed of exposed brick. Its upper section, which houses the bells, stands out for the simplicity of its semicircular arches, giving the building a distinctive silhouette that can be seen from the entrances to the town center.
Inside, the design consists of a main nave covered by a wooden truss of great historical value. These trusses, featuring struts and knuckles, are characteristic of post-Reconquest art in Málaga and demonstrate the skill of the carpenters of that era. Its excellent state of preservation is one of the building’s greatest attractions.
