Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación Church, Yunquera

Ver galería

The Church of La Encarnación is one of the most iconic churches in the Sierra de las Nieves. It is also one of the largest, which is why it is affectionately nicknamed “La Catedral.” It was commissioned in 1505 and built on the ruins of the Al-Andalus fortress of Yunquera. The repairs it has undergone throughout its history—especially during the 18th century, after the War of Independence, and following the Civil War—have given it its current appearance.

It has a Latin cross plan, like the Church of San Miguel Arcángel in Guaro, with three naves, the central one being wider and taller than the side naves. The interior is accessed through two entrances with semicircular arches. One is located in a side aisle, and the main entrance is at the apse, next to which stands its imposing bell tower, which rises prominently above the village.

The interior is divided into three naves separated by cruciform pillars connected by elegant semicircular arches, all covered in plasterwork. The naves feature groin vaults, while the arms of the transept are covered by eight-ribbed vaults, and a small, hemispherical dome sits atop the transept.

Inside lie the remains of Seminarian Duarte, a local resident who died in the civil war and was recently beatified.
