Las Cruces de Monda

Ver galería

There are three small chapels in Monda, located on prominent hills and at strategic points: the Cruz de la Sierra, so named because it is in the mountains; the Cruz Caravaca, situated on a promontory next to the town, which houses a cross from Caravaca; and the Cruz del Agua, located along the road to Marbella, so named because it faces west, the direction from which Atlantic weather fronts arrive. Local tradition holds that they serve to protect the town.

They are small cubic structures with simple Moorish-style tiled roofs built in the 18th century . Inside, they house crosses and sacred images, which are the focus of deep popular devotion, primarily among the women of the village.

The Cross of the Ram is located in a niche next to the altar at the front of the parish church of St. James the Apostle, marking the entrance to the old cemetery. The word “ram” derives from Latin carnarium, “the place where meat is stored.” In a funerary context, it refers to the place where the dead are laid to rest.
