Only a few structures remain of the fortress built in the early Andalusian period; these are partially incorporated into a newly constructed building used for tourism and hospitality that mimics medieval defensive architecture.
Among the preserved remains are an octagonal tower from the Almohad period, a tower from the Nasrid period, sections of the defensive wall, an ancient cistern, and parts of other structures. The fortress fell into Castilian hands in 1485, and orders were given to demolish it in 1489.
In late 1990, an archaeological excavation was conducted that established the historical evolution of this “hisn”-type defensive complex, which remained in use until the 10th century and was reinforced during the Almohad period, with final renovations carried out during the Nasrid period.
