Located in the town’s historic center, this tower—also known as the Torre de Istán and the Arab farmstead—served as a defensive structure and also provided shelter for residents in times of need. Of Nasrid origin, it played a very prominent role in the second half of the 16th century, as Istán—inhabited mainly by Moriscos—was the only place in the Sierra de las Nieves region that rose up against Philip II on January 1, 1569, at the start of the rebellion in the Alpujarras region of Granada.
The tower was cubic in shape, featuring arches, a vault, and courses of regularly shaped stones. The room was rectangular, with two pendentives on the east wing, which began at a medium height and fanned out toward the top, from where the arches forming the vault originated.
The building has now been restored and features a garden.
