Miraflores Castle, El Burgo

What is known today as Miraflores Castle once occupied part of the urban area currently bounded by Pretil Street (formerly Botica Street), Plaza de la Villa, Calzada Street, El Portillo Street, Los Escaloncitos Street, and Plaza Plazoleta. Between 1362 and 1368, it was in the hands of the Castilians, who took advantage of the situation created by the civil war among the Nasrids of Granada. During that time, under the reign of Peter I of Castile, significant improvements were made that enhanced its defensive capabilities.

Given its geographic location—as the fortress was situated on a borderline—El Burgo lacked suburbs, which would have been highly vulnerable in the event of an attack; therefore, the civilian population, if it had existed in the early 15th century, would have been concentrated within the fortified urban area we have just mentioned, known as La Villa, where the mosque was also located; the current Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación was built on that site and preserves part of the previous building.

During the Spanish War of Independence, French troops destroyed part of the military complex, which is now integrated into the town’s urban fabric.
