Viewpoint: Guarda Forestal Natural Monument Viewpoint, El Burgo

Ver galería

The Guarda Forestal Lookout is located on the road that climbs from El Burgo and winds its way toward the city of Ronda. It was established in 1977 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Forest Rangers Corps, which safeguards the integrity of the natural environment. It was designated a Natural Monument of Andalusia in 2011.

It consists of a sculptural group comprising two figures, in which a forest ranger shows a child the vastness of the landscape, hoping to instill and pass on a respect for nature to future generations. The sculptures were placed on a rocky outcrop.

Given its high elevation—900 meters above sea level—the views that captivate our senses are so spectacular that they are difficult to describe. You can see the headwaters of the Turón River and its slopes—lush and forested—home to a landscape of Spanish fir forests, pine forests, holm oak groves, cornicabra olive groves, and juniper thickets, with the Sierra de las Nieves mountain range rising above it all. A mountain steeped in history, traversed by bandits, muleteers, snowmen, charcoal burners, smugglers, partisans, European travelers and explorers, naturalists… and now primarily hikers, all of whom have left their mark and their memories.
