Chapel of Nuestra Señora del Rosario and San José de Alcuzcuz, Benahavís

Located in the Campanes area, on the outskirts of town, the Chapel of Nuestra Señora del Rosario—the town’s patron saint—was built in 2001 to host the pilgrimage held in her honor every October 7.

In 2008, the chapel acquired the statue and altarpiece of San José, which had been located on the Alcuzcuz estate and were donated by its owner, architect and interior designer Jaime Parladé; which gave rise to a new celebration: the Pilgrimage of Saint Joseph, held every March 19, in which the residents of San Pedro de Alcántara also participate; they had a long-standing tradition of traveling to that estate in procession when the statue of the saint was located there.

According to oral tradition, during a cholera epidemic in Andalusia, an attempt was made to move the statue of the Virgen del Rosario out of Benahavís, but as it passed through the Charco de las Mozas, the cart carrying it became so heavy that the mules could not move forward. However, upon turning back toward the town, the cart miraculously became lighter. Since then, it is said that the Virgin decided to remain in Benahavís, and that thanks to her presence, the epidemic never reached the town.

These circumstances enrich the celebrations held in their honor because they imbue them with history, legend, tradition, devotion, and spirituality, while also strengthening the bonds between the two towns.
