Church of Santa Rosa de Lima, Igualeja

Ver galería

This church dates back to the early 16th century, but due to various vicissitudes and numerous construction projects carried out on it, only the bell tower remains of the original building today. This church must have originally been dedicated to another saint, since Saint Rose of Lima, the first saint of the Americas, was born at the end of that century and was canonized in the middle of the next.

It consists of three naves, with the central one being wider and taller, and features a gabled roof covered with Moorish tiles. The entrance is located on the main façade and features a semicircular arch topped by a cross. Next to it stands the slender bell tower, which has a square floor plan and consists of several sections. The top one, beneath semicircular arches, houses the bells. Many people point out that it was part of the minaret of the original mosque.

The interior is understated and modern, with the simplicity of the ceiling and the Gothic-inspired pointed arch leading to the chancel particularly catching the eye. Among the images housed inside are those of Saint Gregory the Great and Saint Anthony of Padua, both from the 18th century.
