The Walls of Tolox Castle

Ver galería

Although we have records of this fortress dating back to the 9th century, associated with the revolt led by the Muladi rebel Omar Ibn Hafsún, the surviving ruins, which are now incorporated into numerous homes, date from the Nasrid period. In the area known as Rinconada del Castillo, the remains of the most heavily fortified section are believed to be located, where an entrance in the form of a small tunnel has been preserved. From there, the wall—which would have run through the Barranco de Amador, along Alozaina Street, and around Villa Baja Square—would have enclosed a residential area, a suburb, now comprising Villa Baja and Villa Alta. Numerous remains have been preserved, but they are incorporated into homes and are not open to the public. However, on Alozaina Street, visitors can see the remains of a circular tower and a section of the original wall about ten meters long, which are incorporated into the facade of a house and rest on a rocky outcrop.
