Yunquera, Sentinel of the National Park

Yunquera is one of the inland municipalities characterized by its strong rural and mountainous character; it is, after all, the true gateway to the National Park. Its natural environment is defined by an abundance of water and the mountain ranges that surround it.

Nestled among chestnut groves and Spanish fir forests, the village boasts traditional architecture and urban design of remarkable beauty, overlooking a ravine at the foot of which lie its characteristic vegetable gardens with their authentic terraces—one of the village’s defining features. A stroll through its streets reveals a network of fountains, stately homes, picturesque landscaped corners, and the imposing silhouette of the Church of La Encarnación.

Its traditional and popular cuisine is remarkable, featuring dishes such as malcocinado and olla de berzas, and pairs perfectly with a visit to the town or a hike through the mountains. It is famous for its mosto wine, which can be sampled at some of its most traditional taverns, and for its sweets. If there’s a magical time to visit Yunquera, it’s during the Corpus Christi celebration in June, when the locals decorate the streets with altars and spectacular flower carpets.
